Who may borrow library materials?

Materials at the Edens Library can be checked out by Columbia College students*, faculty, staff, and Columbia College alumnae.

*Note: Students may not check out materials if they owe $5.00 or more in late fines or if they have materials checked out that are 21 or more days overdue.

South Carolina Statewide Borrowing program
Edens Library also participates in the South Carolina Statewide Library Borrowing program in which patrons must present a state-wide borrowing card to check out materials, and each library sets the limit of books that may be checked out. Individual library policies are available on the Statewide Library Borrowing Agreement Library Information page. Edens Library will loan two books from the General Collection to a Statewide Library Borrowing Agreement patron.

How do I check out library materials?

Locate the materials you want and take them to the Circulation desk on the Main floor. All materials that circulate must be checked out at the Circulation Desk.

When borrowing materials:
Columbia College students, faculty and staff must present their college I.D..
Columbia College alumnae must present a valid driver's license.
South Carolina Statewide Library Borrowing Agreement patrons must present a state-wide borrowing card, a college I.D., and a valid driver's license.

How many books can I check out?

There are no limits on the number of books a Columbia College student or faculty/staff member may have out at one time. However, the following limits do apply in other cases:

  • Only 5 videos may be checked out at one time.
  • Only three reserve items may be checked out at one time.
  • Alumnae and reciprocal patrons may only check out two books at one time.

    How long can library materials be checked out?

    Loan Periods:

    How do I renew something I have borrowed?

    Materials needed longer than the above lending periods may be renewed at the Circulation Desk on the Main floor or over the phone (786-3877).

  • Books and A.V. materials may be renewed once.

  • Reserve materials cannot be renewed.

  • Items on Hold for another patron cannot be renewed.

    What do I do if the book I want is already on loan to someone else?

    If an item is not immediately available for checkout, you may place a HOLD on the item at the Circulation Desk on the Main floor. You will be notified when the item is available. The item will be held for 5 days.

    What if the book I want isn't on the shelf?

    Double check the Library Catalog to make sure the status of the book is AVAILABLE. If it is "checked out" (indicated by a due date), you may place a HOLD on the item at the Circulation Desk on the Main floor. You will be notified when the item is available. The item will be held for 5 days.

    If an item is not checked out, please report it at the Circulation or Reference Desk. The Circulation staff will search for the missing item. If the item is found, you will be notified.

    What are library fines for overdue items?

    The following fines apply to overdue materials:
    Books $ .10 daily
    All Media (except Videos) $ .10 daily
    Videos $ .50 daily
    One to three day Reserves $1.00 daily
    Overnight and hourly Reserves $ .25 hourly

    Note: Students may not check out materials if they either owe $5.00 or more in late fines or if they have materials checked out that are 21 or more days overdue.

    What do I do if the library does not own a book or article that I want?

    Through Interlibrary Loan, the Edens Library can borrow a book or article for you from another library.
